Head coach Rich Austin and the varsity boys basketball team are off to a strong start with a 5-0 record on the season. The team defeated John Hay on Tuesday to go to 3-0 in Senate League play, and now awaits its greatest challenge of the season. Perennial state power St. Edward will make the short trip down West 140th to play the Lawyers Saturday night at John Marshall. Tickets to the game are $5 and will be available at the door.
Marshall, under first year head coach Rich Austin, is having a turnaround year. Last year they went 8-21 on the season. “I’m very pleased with our progress as a team,” says Austin, a rookie head coach that has yet to lose a game, “We’ve become a family off the court and on the court.” He says that he and the team are not surprised by their record because “We worked very hard in the offseason.” Their success has been getting noticed around school lately, and they appreciate the positive comments they’ve heard. “It’s neat to hear [compliments]” Austin says, “but now come expectations”.
St. Edward, 3-0 on the young season, will present a huge challenge for the Lawyers. Austin, who played his high school ball at St. Ignatius, is very familiar with the Eagles program. “They are obviously a great team” Austin said, “Eric Flannery is one of the best coaches in the state. It will be a great test for us. I want to see how we react.” Austin knows his team is a heavy underdog, but expects to compete. “We don’t have a scared bone in our bodies.”
Junior Varsity tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 at John Marshall, followed by the varsity game at about 7pm.
