The varsity girls basketball team defeated Glenville Friday 58-48 at home in “The Court Room”. The result is a stark contrast from last year’s 54-20 loss to the Tarblooders. John Marshall is now 3-1 on the season, 2-0 in Senate League play. Senior Rochelle Bradly led the scoring with 18 points, including a three pointer.
The teams battled back-and-forth in the early going, and a late basket by senior Reiana Whitsett put Marshall ahead 15-13 at the end of the first quarter. Marshall opened the second period with an 8-2 run to open up an eight point lead. A three point basket by Teresa Stubbfield with ten seconds left gave Marshall a 33-25 halftime lead.
Marshall pulled away late in the third quarter, as they went on a 12-0 run to make the score 49-31. Bradly and Stufffield each made a three pointer during the run, which appeared to put the Tarblooders away. However, Glenville opened the fourth quarter with a 10-0 run that cut the lead to eight with 4:42 remaining in the game. Whitsett broke the Lawyers scoring drought with a basket, and Marshall went on to win 58-48.
Whitsett finished the game with 17 points; senior Terry Gates had 11; and Stubbfield had 10. The Lawyers next game will be a home contest against John Hay on Tuesday. The JV game is scheduled for 4pm, and will be followed by the varsity.
