The defending City Champions opened their home season on Thursday with a victory over JFK. The Lawyers won 54-27, taking ten of the 15 weight classes. Five wins were via pin, four by forfeit. Marshall didn’t forfeit any matches, reflecting the rosters increased size compared to last year.
Marshall winners against JFK included Bahati Juma (126 lbs), Carlos Ortiz (145 lb), Raylon Jefferson (160 lb), Christian Diaz (195 lb), and Eli Walter (285 lb). Head coach Russ Germaine was pleased with his team’s effort. “The kids wrestled tough” he said after the match. He believes the team still needs work on its technique, and is looking for the kids to push each other in practice.
The JFK win follows a solid performance at the Hawken Tournament over the weekend. Allen Dixon (220 lb) finished third in that tournament, leading the Lawyer effort. Steven Zabala (113 lb.) finished fifth, and Lamar Hamilton took sixth at 138.
The team returns to action Saturday at the Cleveland Central Catholic Tournament. Their next home meet will be January 5th at 6pm. Marshall will face Lakewood and Shaw.
