The varsity boys basketball team defeated Brookside 63-53 on Saturday night to open the season. It was a successful debut for new head coach Rich Austin, who was coaching his first career high school game. Austin described the game as “a humbling experience” since Brookside was coached by Senate League legend Phil Argento, who has coached for decades since playing alongside Pat Riley for Adolph Rupp at the University of Kentucky.
The game was tied at 24 when Taevyn Coles scored to put John Marshall up 26-24 with 11 seconds remaining in the first half. The Lawyers opened the third period with an 11-2 run, and maintained a solid lead throughout the rest of the game. Terrell Repress had 23 points to lead Marshall in scoring. Quentin Williams scored 14 points, Armond Finney had 7, and Rameir Oates had six. Earlier in the evening, the JV team defeated Brookside 47-46. Jason Williams scored the winning basket in double overtime.
Coach Austin is anxious to get back to action. “We need to continue getting better” he said after the Brookside win. The Lawyers next game is Tuesday at home in “The Court Room” to face John Adams. The Senate League matchup starts with JV at 4pm to be followed by varsity.
