The Varsity football team defeated Lincoln West on Friday at Rhodes Field to notch its first win of the season. Taevon Coles led the offensive attack with 239 yards rushing and three touchdowns. The victory raises the Lawyers record to 1-1 in the Senate League.
Marshall struck first in the game, as Coles ran for a nine yard touchdown on the opening drive. That put the Lawyers ahead 6-0 less than two minutes into the game. Lincoln West quickly responded with a 65 yard touchdown run on their opening drive. A successful two-point conversion put the Wolverines ahead 8-6 midway through the opening quarter. The Lawyers answered with another quick touchdown drive, this one capped by a 15 yard scoring run. The Lawyers led 12-8 with five minutes remaining, and the defense forced a Wolverine fumble on their next series.
Both teams played much better defensively in the second quarter, holding the score at 12-8 at halftime. Coles made a big defensive play in the third quarter, recovering a Lincoln West fumble with 8:41 left on the clock. The Lawyer offense scored again with 4:52 left in the third, with a three yard touchdown run by Coles. The extra point from Ramesh Kafley made the score 19-7.
The Wolverines wouldn’t go quietly….they rallied for another touchdown on their next drive, a 58 yard pass play. They converted another successful two point conversion to make the game 19-16 with 1:54 remaining in the third quarter.
Marshall pulled away with a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Devyn Ellis ran for a three yard touchdown with 8:41 left in the game. He later threw a 20 yard touchdown pass to John Rhein with 7:05 left on the clock. Kafley made both extra points to make the final score 33-16.
The Lawyers played strong defense, especially in the second half. The effort was led by Cervonte White, who had 10 tackles on the day. Jeriah Stoudemaire and Esai Pilipili each added six tackles; Carl Polk and Dwayne Stowers each had five. Coles and Willie Phillips each recovered a fumble. Offensively, Doug Clements contributed a 25 yard run and a 25 yard kick return. Eddie Settles had 15 yards on a punt return.
